Information

Raising often allows you to gain information from the hands of others. An excellent situation for an information raise comes when you get a pair of aces with a bad kicker (eg A8s in pocket) on the flop. In this situation, many players just call up the river, where they eventually lose the pot to the better hand.

It should be cheaper to raise your opponent directly on the flop, so when you are the victim of a re-raise your hand will almost certainly be inferior and the hand will then be the right choice. If your opponent only calls, the turn should be checked and usually the river will pay one opponent bet. Note that in this case too, the late position is a great benefit because you could take a free card on the turn.

Bluffing and semi-bluffing

Of course, you can only raise to fight your opponent. Winning a big pot by bluffing is one of the coolest emotions you can experience in poker. Bluffing in this context means raising a hand that has no practical chance of winning the hand on the screen (for example, raising when you have no bets or overcards to the table).
